A publication for which George Virtue utilised the maps of Thomas Moule is David Hume’s ‘History of England’. The publication is more commonly referred to as Hume and Smollett. Hume (1711-76) was born in Edinburgh and was a noted historian. The History was first published in Edinburgh 1754-62 and covered the period from Julius Caeser through James II. The writer Tobias Smollett (1721-71) brought the history from James II to the death of George II. Bringing it up to the Victorian era was Edward Farr. This example taking it to the ‘tenth year’ of her reign or May 1847. It would seem only natural that some examples of the History of England might be desired with a series of maps. As publisher of the Thomas Moule maps, they were the logical choice. Contemporary adverts noted do not record any map content and there is no evidence to support the fact that it was published so, but there does exist examples like this with maps bound in at the time. One example of two volumes only lacking the continuation to Queen Victoria was sold at a Phillips auction 17 September 1992 lot 253, it included a full set of county maps. An essay was supplied by the literary editor Reverend Henry Stebbing (1799-1883). Provenance: acquired for a private English collection in 1979. Burden (1994) 91; Burgess (2009) 128; Carroll (1996) 95; not in Chubb (1927); ODNB.
