Undoubtedly this example is made from the true first issue. This is indicated by the position of the new preliminary material and both pagination misprints, one of which was corrected for the 1613 edition. It seems probable that some examples of the first edition were rebound with the second part when published in 1622. Three examples noted in auction seam to have been formed in this manner. Here on rebinding to include the 1622 second book the new preliminary pages are included before the first poem. This includes the portrait, the typographic title page here logically replaced with the 1622 general one, and the Table. In this example the engraved portrait of Henry Prince of Wales is found in the second state. Henry was the eldest son of James I who tragically died of typhoid fever in the year, 1612. The title page to the second part is known in two forms, either with or without Drayton’s name. Their priority is unknown and in this example his name is not present. This is a book of songs by the Elizabethan poet Michael Drayton (1563-1631). He began publication of his longest poem in 1612. It comprises a series of songs in praise of the English and Welsh countryside, with accompanying allegorical maps. This 1622 edition is the first complete edition, containing all thirty sections, each with a highly attractive engraved map. The newly engraved maps for the second book also contain page numbers engraved near the upper margin and are therefore found in only one state. The new maps as stated in the title to the second part cover the area ‘betwixt the two famous Riuers of Thames, and Tweed’. Provenance: Manuscript ownership inscription of ‘Wm Bright’ in a seventeenth century hand on the first two leaves; from a 30 year old Private collection. Chubb 35; Cope ‘The Puzzling Aspects of Drayton’s Poly-Olbion’, ‘The Map Collector’ no. 17 pp. 16-20; Hind II p. 258 (portrait); Hodson Supp I.ii; Kingsley IV 1.ii,3; Shirley BL T.DRA 1d and following; Skelton 13; STC 7228-30.
