Emanuel Auguste Dieudonne Marin Joseph, Marquis de Las Cases (1766-1842) was an historian and friend of Napoleon. He began a distinguished military career but fled France as a Royalist during the Revolution. It was later that he won favour and was made a Count by Napoleon. He accompanied him to Saint Helena after Waterloo. Whilst in exile in England he wrote the present atlas which was first published in Paris 1802-04 under the pseudonym A. Le Sage.
