This is the final volume of arguably Bellin’s greatest atlas, the ‘Petit Atlas Maritime’ which covers the coasts of France. This is a fine example with large margins. Jacques Nicolas Bellin held official status as royal hydrographer and ingéniuer géographe de la marine et du Dépôt des Cartes et Plans. He was responsible for compiling atlases of sailing charts for military and official use as well as for commercial publication. His maritime atlas includes ‘a large amount of fresh material’ (NMM). Provenance: Mopelia Collection, Christie’s, London, 5 June 2019 lot 127. National Maritime Museum no. 211; Nordenskiold Collection 1 no. 10; Phillips 638; Shirley BL M. Bell 5a.
