The publishing firm of Colton was founded by Joseph Hutchins Colton (1800-93) in 1831 in New York. His major work was the ‘Atlas of the World’ the first volume of which was first published in 1855. A second volume was issued the following year. The two volume format continued in 1857 and 1858, however in 1857 he issued a single volume entitled the ‘General Atlas’. This 1860 edition is the first issued after the dissolution of the partnership with Johnson & Browning who in the same year issued their own work. Provenance: inscription of ‘A L Hard from Grandpa’ first free endpaper; ex Richard Arkway, New York, 1991, for the private collection of Rodney Shirley. This edition not in Phillips; Ristow p. 325.
