An atlas with an unusual profusion of non-European maps. There are only a small number of general maps of European countries. Guillaume Thomas Francois Raynal (1713-96) was a Jesuit author of many historical works including the ‘L’Histoire Philosophique et Politique …’ This atlas was produced to accompany that work and usually forms the final volume. It was perhaps his best known work but it was in fact banned in France, copies being publicly burned in 1779. Following the issue of an arrest warrant he fled the country only to return later and become elected States-General, such were the vagaries of French politics of the time. The maps are the work of Rigobert Bonne (1727-95) an engineer, mathematician, and cartographer. He succeeded Jacques Nicolas Bellin as the hydrographer at the Depot de la Marine in 1773. Some but not all the maps are engraved by Gaspard Andre. Provenance: Guillaumot-Richard auction 22.3.14 lot 37; private French collection. Phillips (1909-) 652; Sabin (1868) 68080; Shirley (2004) T-Bonn 3a; Tooley’s Dictionary (1999-2004).
