D’Anville (1697-1782) is said to have produced his first map at the age 15 but it was his maps for Du Halde which gained him notoriety for the first time. D’Anville followed Guillaume de L’Isle as cartographer to the King. His vast collection of cartographic material survives today. D’Anville’s maps of many areas of the world were among the most influential of the century. ‘To illustrate the cartography of the second half of the eighteenth century, a D’Anville map is essential. He dominated not only French but all contemporary geographers [and] his aim was reform, the rejection of plagiarism, critical examination of authorities, a basis of astronomical observation and the deletion of unverified material’ R.V. Tooley. The work is derived from that of Charles Rollin (1661-1741) a French scholar whose speciality was ancient cartography. D’Anville first published a series of maps derived from Rollin’s research in the 1740’s. This series were put together by Ambroise Tardieu, map maker and engraver of note. Not in Phillips; Tooley Dictionary.
