In the period 1718-20 there were no less than four reduced versions of John Ogilby’s landmark ‘Britannia’ first published in 1675. Of these the most desirable is this one by Thomas Gardner. He is virtually unknown, indeed this is his only recorded work. It was in fact the first of the versions to reach the market being first advertised 30 December 1718 in the ‘Daily Courant’. The publishers were Jacob Tonson and John Watts. Tonson (1656-1736) was a well known publisher, Watts was renowned for the quality of his typesetting. This example is in the preferred unfolded oblong quarto state. Provenance: Dr. Adrian Almond collection with his gilt stamped initials at the foot of the spine. Bennett (1996) pp. 36-7; Carroll (1996) Appendix 3; Chubb 137; Harley, J B (1970) Introduction to “Britannia Depicta”; Shirley ‘Atlases in the BL’ T.Gard 1a.
