Thomas Salmon (1679-1767) was an historian and geographer. His first major work was the ‘Modern History’ issued in parts over many years and consists of numerous volumes with maps by Herman Moll. This second work is a one volume comprehensive study. In the Preface Salmon states that ‘since the Days of my Friend Moll the Geographer, we have had nothing but Copies of Foreign Maps, by Engravers unskilled in Geography, who have copied them with all their Errors’. In offering maps by Thomas Jeffery’s he found a worthwhile engraver.
For this second edition a new map of China was added. It should also be noted that this example bears the variant North America in which the spelling error ‘LOUISANIA’ occurs. ESTC T69006; McCorkle 351; Shirley (2004) G.Salm 2b; Tooley’s Dictionary (1999-2004).
