An entirely unrecorded atlas which appeared on the market in 2020. The maps to this work were first issued by Robert Butters as ‘An Atlas of England’ in, it is believed 1803. ‘The Picture of England’ as a work was first published in 1803 by John Hatchard (fl. 1785-1808), without crediting its author William Green, whose name only appears in the more commonly found 1804 edition. It seems likely that Robert Butters owned the maps as Hatchard does not have a history of map publication and the ‘Atlas of England’ was re-issued in circa 1805 after the Hatchard issues of ‘The Picture of England’ in 1804. This is further corroborated by this recent discovery.
The text remains that of Green, although here entirely reset. A new addition is a ‘Description of the Principal Post Roads in England’ consisting of 76 pages bearing its own half title. Also new is an index of places in England and Wales. In this work all the maps are bound at the end of each volume. Many of the plates show signs of having been cut and only three alterations to the maps have been noted. The compass in those of Cambridgeshire and Cornwall has been erased and in Kent ‘German Ocean’ now reads ‘German Oceon’.

Octavo (190 x 110 mm.), two volumes, uncut, recent quarter blue morocco, marbled paper boards, spine with gilt ruled compartments, each with gilt leaf or titles, binders label of Graham Bloodworth, Leicester. Volume 1 with engraved frontispiece map of England and Wales, typographic title page, Introduction, pp. viii, 184, with 29 (of 30) county maps; volume 2 with typographic title page, pp. (4), 94, (2, half title), 76, 16, and 10 further county maps, in total 40 (of 41) maps, lacking Norfolk apparently not present, minor repair to margin and tear to first two leaves of the first volume, Northamptonshire in first state with title at right angles on the south side of the map, all maps bound at the end of each volume.
