The ‘Descriptive Atlas’ is the work of the Reverend Thomas Milner, the maps are derived from the work of Augustus Petermann. The first edition of the atlas appears to have been 1850. This undated issue is dated to circa 1858 on the basis of a reference to the date 4 April 1858 on page 36. Milner (d.1882) was an astronomer, Petermann ((1822-78) arrived at Gotha in 1854 to join the published company of Perthes. He founded and produced the famous journal named after him. Provenance: acquired from the Harrington Brothers in 1995 for private collection of Rodney Shirley. Quarto (305 x 245 mm.), recent half calf, green cloth boards, ribbed spine with ornate gilt ruled compartments, gilt titles. With 72 maps and charts in early wash and outline colour, according with the index apart from omitting Mercator’s world and including an extra map of the whole of Germany, pp. (6), 185, (1), 56, some light foxing as might be expected, otherwise in good condition.
