The Reverend Richard Turner (c.1724-94) taught mathematics and philosophy at Worcester and was a cleric at Magdalen College, Oxford. This FIRST EDITION of the ‘View of the Earth’ was an instructional book on geography for ‘young gentlemen and young ladies’. He commends the subject as ‘a fine accomplishment … [and] as a necessary part of useful education’. The maps are of the world and four continents with America separated into North and South. The accompanying diagrams are fascinating illustrating such things as the curvature of the earth, the seasons. The geographical clock on page 21 bears a volvelle. The end of the book features twenty ‘Problems’, six ‘Phaenomenon’ and eight ‘Paradox’s. There were further editions in 1766, 1771 and 1787.
