Matthaus Seutter (1678-c.1757) was an engraver, globe maker and map publisher in Augsburg where he was born and died. He was apprenticed to Johann Baptist Homann and his influences can be clearly seen in his work. Although he became Homann’s main competitor his work was largely not original. In 1731 he was though named Imperial Geographer to Karl VI. He married three times and had thirteen children! Only four of them joined the firm, his son-in-law Tobias Conrad Lotter continued the it after his death. Many of the maps in this ‘Atlas Minor’ are reductions of folio maps. Much of the work is that of his son Albrecht Carl Seutter (1722-62) and son-in-law Tobias Conrad Lotter (1717-77). That of the Belgian Federation bears an inset of the East Indies, Portugal one of Brasil and others to. Insets on the basis of size were usually reserved for folio maps. There is a map of the Post Roads in Germany. Most of the maps bear attractive cartouches. A manuscript index at the front is written in French and although it does not follow the contents literally all maps are present. Tucked into the the back of the atlas is a folded circular celestial map of the southern hemisphere. The contents of the atlas appear to vary from one copy to the next. Nordenskiold 283; Phillips 3494; Shirley ‘British Isles’ Seutter 3.2; Shirley ‘Atlases in the British Library’ Seu 3a.
