A very fine scripture atlas published by Mathews and Leigh and printed by the partnership of L. Harrison and J. C. Leigh. It is unclear if J. C. Leigh is related to the Leigh family of printers and publishers also of the Strand, London, which was founded by Samuel Leigh. Little is known about this work, although this example appears to be more complete than those traced. The Baskes collection example bears only 18 maps, that in the Library of Congress (Phillips 87) bears 19, ours contains 20 maps engraved by amongst others N. R. Hewitt. Examples of the atlas are noted with the maps uncoloured, here they are in superb early wash colour. The label on the binding indicates that the works was sold ‘Plain’ for £2 2s and £2 12s 6d coloured.
What is particularly notable about this example is the presence of a printed advert disclosing the efforts that have been made to “render it as accurate as possible, all the most approved authorities, ancient and modern, have been consulted”. This document signed “18, Strand, 16th March, 1812” goes on to request that “those who honour the Work with their patronage, not to pay for it without receiving in return a printed receipt, to prevent the possibility of any mistake”. A hand written footnote states “A List of those who patronise the Work will shortly be published” followed by a short list of subscribers. That six-page list of Patrons is also present headed by His Royal Highness the Prince Regent. A very fine example of the atlas. Phillips 87; Tooleys Dictionary.
