Sidney Hall (fl.1818-1860) began his career as an engraver for the Arrowsmith family. His first county maps were those published by Samuel Leigh in 1820. This series of plates was prepared for John Gorton’s ‘Topographical Dictionary’ issued in parts from 1830-32. The plates through their life were used in a number of different works; the first known with this title was issued in 1842. From the 1850s the atlas was issued in lithographic transfers. A study of the railways present on some of the maps indicates a date of issue around 1882. Provenance: manuscript ownership inscription of J M Sharpe to the title page; private English collection.
