This is an example of the third edition determined by the date of the imprint on the title pages. The first title page is dated 1 August 1776, but the ensuing one is dated 1 January 1777. As a young man Mostyn John Armstrong assisted his father Andrew Armstrong in the production of the large scale map of Northumberland published in 1769. Having access to his fathers papers on that of Durham (published 1768), Lothians (1773) and Lincolnshire (to be published 1779) he already had much of what he needed for this work. The original announcement in 1773 stated his intention to illustrate the two great roads to Edinburgh, those going through Newcastle and Carlisle. However, he presented this work first so as to keep its size useful and if demand proved sufficient he would produce the other. It never materialised. The strips extend to Edinburgh, beyond those of John Ogilby which stopped at Berwick making it a desirable little work.
