This is the second edition of the ‘General Atlas’ first published in 1761. It was issued to accompany the first and only edition of the ‘Collection’. This is usually given the date 1764 on the basis of the London plan bearing this date. Provenance: Bookplates of Herbert George Fordham the great carto-bibliographer, dated 1901. Two volumes, oblong octavo. Contemporary full calf, gilt spine. The ‘Collection’ with engraved pictorial title and dedication, engraved contents leaf and 22 engraved maps by J. Ellis and 17 plans on 19 sheets. All in early wash colour. The ‘New General’ with engraved title and dedication leaf, engraved ‘Catalogue of Maps’ and 39 maps on 45 sheets, 6 folding. All in early wash colour.
