Lacking any title, the atlas contains 64 maps, indeed it is difficult to tell whether a title was ever present as the front endpaper has been glued to the first map. Those of Wales are included but not Ireland or Scotland. This series of plates was issued first in the Anglia Contracta c.1694, then in the History of England in editions of 1696, 1697 and 1703. They were also issued in editions of Camden’s Britannia in 1701 and 1711. There last use was by Francis Grose in various editions of the Antiquities of England and Wales from 1773. The only work cited here that does not include text is the Anglia Contracta leading us to the conclusion that this is an example of the work. The Welsh counties are represented here whereas they are not in the History … indicating that it is not a separate volume of maps for that work. Likewise the Britannia would have had the general maps of Scotland and Ireland. Our example lacks the William and Mary portrait which appears never to have been bound in. This might indicate an issue after William’s death in March 1702. The atlas was still being advertised in 1705 (Hodson III p. 137). The Westmoreland map is damaged and another folding one is inserted from the Political Magazine issued from 1782. The manuscript index must have been written about the same date as the contents identify it as a new map. Only eight copies of the atlas are known, six of which are in institutions.
