A rare work describing the British colonies in the Antilles with engraved title and 13 maps by Jacques Nicolas Bellin. It includes historic and geographical accounts of Jamaica, Antigua, Barbuda, St. Christopher (St. Kitts) and Nevis, Monserrat, Barbados, Anguilla, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda and the Lucayes or Bahamas. Eight of maps are folding, of note are those of the Virgin Islands, the Bahamas and Bermuda. There are also 9 engraved vignettes in the text, 8 of which are views. Although dated 1758 on the title page the map of Jamaica is dated 1759. Phillips (1909-) 3940; Sabin (1868) 4553; Shirley (2004) T.Bell 2a.

Quarto (260 x 195 mm.), full contemporary mottled calf, very ornate gilt spine with raised bands, red morocco gilt lettered label affixed. With engraved title page by Pierre-Philippe Choffard dated 1758, pp. xii, 171, with 13 maps by Bellin, 8 of these are folding, two in early colour, there are also 9 engraved vignettes in the text, 8 of which are views. With original silk tie. A few leaves a little browned, one or two fox marks, map of Barbados with rustmarks.
