Only two recorded examples, both in Sweden. An extremely rare Swedish map of the world by Gustaf Billberg (1772-1844) drawn on the Mercator projection. It is derived as stated in the title from a four sheet map published in London by Carington Bowles in 1785 and engraved by Per Aspegren (1788-1854). A single sheet reduction was published by Bowles in 1790 also. In this map all of the names are in Swedish and the tracks of the three Cook voyages, Moore & Smith and Phipps are all depicted. One of the most notable features of the map is the presence of ‘Ulimaroa, Nya Holland’ for Australia. This term was heard by Captain James Cook from the New Zealand Maoris and was first used on another Swedish map by Daniel Djuberg in 1780. The region is named ‘Polynesien’. Only two other examples have been located, one in the Swedish Royal Library (dated 1808) and the other in the Military Archives of Sweden. Neither Billberg or Aspegren are recorded in Tooley’s Dictionary.
