ONLY THE THIRD EXAMPLE KNOWN OF THIS EARLY EDITION. The plates for this atlas were first issued in Thomas Read’s very rare ‘English Traveller’ published in 1746 in only three volumes, the work was never completed. Jean Rocque (c.1704-62), to use his native name, was a Huguenot émigré who at an early age settled in England. By 1734 he was a surveyor, engraver and publisher. His work is renowned for its beauty as well as its accuracy and several important large scale maps were produced by him. He acquired the plates to the ‘English Traveller’ and in or around 1753 three issues of ‘The Small British Atlas’ were published. Of the first just one example survives. For this second edition, a newly engraved title page is dated 1753 indicating clearly its issue later in the same year. The parliamentary map bears a slightly revised title now reading ‘A Parliamentary Map of England’ and is still dated 1753. The plate numbers added for the previous issue have here been erased with traces remaining and the map of the Isle of Man is present which was most likely omitted earlier. As before the title is in English and French indicating Rocque’s desire to market on the continent. There were only two recorded examples of this work, one in Cambridge University Library (Atlas.7.75.1), the other in a private collection. Provenance: with manuscript inscription on verso of the title page ‘Thos. Edwards 1779’; private English collection. Not in Chubb; not in the ESTC; Hodson (1984-97) 199; Worms & Baynton-Williams (2011).
