This is an unrecorded work although examples have been noted in two institutions: the Bodleian Library (Allen 406); National Library of Scotland (Newman.636). Close examination of the plates with the edition of 1775 above clearly shows this to be a later work. The imprints of Sayer and Bennett which appeared on some of the plates are here removed. Likewise, at least one plate alteration has been noted. On plate 57, strip 4, ‘Dunkton or Downton’ has been erased and replaced with ‘Downton’. The final strip here is also altered from ‘Island of Portland’ to ‘Portland Isle’. For instance, on plate 1, strip 4 bears the addition at the bottom of ‘to Amersham Loudwater Wooburn Moor’. Other plates may well bear further alterations. Their priority is clear. Reference to plates lacking the imprint were recorded but no identified work had been discovered.

Sayer continued trading on his own from about 1782 following the development of Bennett’s health issues. Bennett left the partnership in 1786. By 1790 he was trading as Sayer & Co. with Laurie & Whittle who were employees, indicating that this work was issued in the period between. The previous preface is discarded but the index is retained, still with no mention of plates 102-104. The general map is retitled ‘A General Map of the Roads of England & Wales’. Provenance: private English collection. Bennett Road Books pp. 57-9 & 73-4; Lintot, Roger (1990) ‘Road Map Confusion’, in The Map Collector no. 51 pp. 53-4; Smith, David (1991) ‘Road Map Confusion Revisited’, in IMCoS Journal no. 45 pp. 6-11 & Part II issue no. 47 pp. 29-39; Worms & Baynton-Williams (2011).
