Although printed in English it was like so many seventeenth century atlas published in Amsterdam for English use by Louis Vlasbloem. From early on in the production of sea charts the North Sea featured prominently. This is because extensive trade was carried across its waters. Ginsberg points out that Blaeu’s 1623 chart entitled ‘De Custen van Engelandt, Nederlandt, Iutlandt en Nororwegen gelegen aende Noordzee ‘was clearly the model for Louis Vlasbloem’s general chart. Vlasbloem was a publisher of pilot guides and charts, his earliest work is dated 1646. This work is so rare that no definitive collation exists. Indeed, he only produced 11 charts in his whole career. The British Library example copy contains only four charts (of five). In this example two of the charts appear to have been originally joined, but have been separated for ease of use. Provenance: The Elder Brethren of the Corporation of Trinity House, engraved armorial bookplate, sale, Christie’s, 3 November 1993, lot 159, Nico Israel for Lord Wardington. Ginsberg (2012) p. 295-7; Koeman IV, Vl 5; Shirley, British Library M.VLAS-1a.
