A rare work of Virginia and the Carolinas. This work, Sir William Keith’s “History of the British Plantations in America … Containing the History of Virginia”, is the first volume of a series of books on the English plantations. It turned out to be the only one published. The author was Governor of Virginia from 1717-26. A prior owner’s name in manuscript is inscribed on the upper cover “William Jackson”. It may be presumptuous to assume but a William Jackson (1759-1828) took part in the American Revolution as an aide to Major-General Benjamin Lincoln. After the War he applied to be a secretary to Washington and was nominated by Alexander Hamilton. This he achieved in 1789. ADNB; Church 930; Sabin 37240.
