The Woolhope Naturalists’ Field Club was based in Hereford, the capital of a county famous for its apples and pears. The Club’s Pomology Committee was headed by the Reverend Charles Henry Bulmer whose sons in 1887 founded the company which today is now the largest cider-maker in the world. In 1876 the Club considered publishing a ‘Herefordshire Pomona’ and collected 1200 plates for two exhibitions. From these a selection was made for which further descriptions were required. The first of seven parts was published in the autumn of 1878 and following issues were approximately every year until 1885. The artists used all eight autumn seasons and their sunny hours to record 432 varieties of apples and pears. The descriptions were the work of Doctor Robert Hogg (1818-97) with the various introductory material being the work of the overall editor Doctor Henry Graves Bull (c.1818-85). It is considered a vital book in the history of each variety. ‘An Oak Spring Pomona’ (1990) pp. 218-222.
