This large-scale map of the region of the Dacota Country by Gouverneur Kemble Warren (1830-1882) is actually one of the most detailed maps of the eastern portion of Nebraska. The map was produced whilst serving on with William S. Harney on his infamous Sioux Expedition of 1855-56. It was ordered to conduct a campaign against the Sioux Indians whose hostility was effecting the overland trail. Harney’s thoughts are recorded thus ‘… we destroy more of them than they do of us. This is a fact well known to those experienced in Indian warfare. Savages must be crushed before then can be completely conquered.’ Harney’s attack on a Lakota village on 3 September 1855 on Blue Creek was particularly brutal. It came to be known as the Battle of Blue Water or the site of the Harney Massacre. The map extends from Missouri to Ft. Laramie and the Platte River to the Missouri. Some of the finest detailed maps of the American West prior to the Civil War were produced by Warren. Refer Cohen ‘Mapping the West’ pp. 172-5; Howes, W. W118; Rumsey 1172.001; Storm, C. 4546; Wagner & Camp 283; Wheat 870-1.
