A powder horn engraved with a map of the Chesapeake Bay area and inscribed “Captain John Sutton, York Town Camp”. Although records in Virginia failed to discover a ‘Captain’ John Sutton in the Revolutionary war or in Virginia I was able to trace a John Sutton II (c.1735-1810) who was known as Captain John Sutton. He was born in Albemarle, Orange County, Virginia c.1735 and married Temperance Lane. He was indeed a Sergeant in the Revolutionary War and died in Scott, Kentucky 14 June 1810. The map’s coverage extends from Norfolk, Virginia, in the south to Fort Trenton to the north of Philadelphia. It also displays ‘Williamsberg’ and ‘Glauster’. Various symbols for forts and windmills accompany the place names and views of houses for the larger towns. References: Stephen V. Grancsay American Engraved Powder Horns. A study based on the J. H. Grenville Gilbert Collection. Philadelphia 1976.
