Exceedingly scarce map published in Mexico, only the second printed on which the name Texas appears. The first, also by Antonio y Ramírez, was published in Paris in 1768 and is illustrated in Martin & Martin (pl. 20). Alzate was a Mexican born cleric who was part of the Enlightenment and made significant contributions to medicine, astronomy, mathematics, botany, and geography. He was elected member of the Royal Academy of Science in Paris, which published many of his papers. When the Mexican National Academy of Science was founded in 1884 it was named after him. Refer to Martin & Martin plate 20 where this map is not mentioned.

The map appears in Francisco Antonio Lorenzana Y Butrón’s ‘Historia de Nueva-Espana’ published in Mexico, 1770. Only one example has appeared on the ABPC in 28 years. ‘An important and highly esteemed work, containing the celebrated letters of Cortez to the Emperor Charles V’ (Sabin). The text contained the second, third and fourth letters of Cortés, together with extensive notes. The first letter remained lost, the fifth was not discovered until 1777 and remained unpublished until 1844. Lorenzana y Butron was the first to attempt to identify the route of Cortés to Mexico. Palau 63204/ Sabin 42065/ Wagner (Spanish Southwest) 152.
