De L’Isle (1675-1726) is important as the first ‘scientific’ cartographer who incorporated the most current information on exploration and topography into his maps. Lloyd Brown states that De L’Isle “undertook a complete reform of a system of geography that had been in force since the second century, and by the time he was twenty five he had very nearly accomplished his purpose”. This fine detailed plan of the city of Paris contains a number of tables in alphabetic order identifying the roads and Faubourgs of Paris. A number of the key buildings are shown in profile. This plan is notable for being the first to use the meridian of Paris which required, as might be expected, a high standard of cartography. This is an example of the FIRST STATE. Boutier (2002) 185A.
