In the Preface John Hay claimed 18 years experience of piloting the Channel in naval, revenue and private vessels. The plates were engraved and printed by Philip Brannon (1817-90), the son of George Brannon, best known for his published works on the Isle of Wight. The work provides charts of several key portions of the British coast on the British Channel and one of the Channel Islands. The double page charts are of the Needles off the Isle of Wight and one of the eastern half of the Solent and its approaches. Provenance: dedication copy from the author inscribed inside upper board.
