This map by Tobias Conrad Lotter was engraved by him for his father-in-law Mattheus Seutter who first published it. It is derived from the highly important Lewis Evans’ map of 1749, one of the most significant maps of the region published to date. The original map was separately published but that by Seutter had much greater distribution through his atlases. Because of its unusual longitudinally compression New England is included upper right. It extends southwards to the Chesapeake bay. To the west are the Appalachian Mountains which contain the English colonies to their east while using rather unusual border configurations. The area of focus however is clearly the mid-Atlantic colonies. New York is unusually configured and appears to be broken up whilst New Jersey is fairly accurate. Pennsylvania has an unusual western border and a curiously holiday resort called the ‘Schuylkill Riviera’! It is finished with two ornate cartouches, the title being especially so. This depicts William Penn negotiating with the natives. McCorkle (2001) 750.4.
