Daniel Paterson was commissioned in the Army in 1765 and served in the Quartermaster General’s department until 1812. He was Assistant Quartermaster General for the last eight years of his service. He then became Lieutenant-Governor of Quebec, Canada. The first edition of Paterson’s Roads appeared in 1771 and went through 14 editions by 1808 by which time it had been eclipsed by John Cary’s ‘New Itinerary’. The book is reminiscent of John Ogilby, but this is a new work in which road-maps are combined with itineraries and an index of country seats. In addition Paterson was among the first to include any sheets for Scotland. Paterson’s work from 1799 was expanded with material from Cary’s work.
