The first detailed map of the extreme south western present day United States. It shows the region around San Diego, San Luis Rey and San Juan Capistrano. It extends southwards to the Bay of San Francisco in Mexico. Present day Arizona is shown in an unprecedented scale and is today dominated by Phoenix. The “Presidio de Tubson” (Tuscon) is shown in the east and the region names numerous Indian tribes.
From Vander Maelen’s ‘Atlas Universel de Geographie Physique, Statistique et Mineralogique’. The atlas was the first published in lithograph and formed a Sanson-Flamsteed projected globe of 7.75 metres in diameter. This was constructed in the ‘Etablissement Geographique’ in Brussels. A total of 400 maps were produced covering the world on the same scale throughout. Koeman III Vdm 1.
