A fine bird’s eye Tudor perspective view of the historic city of Norwich first published in 1581. Norwich at the time was considered second only to London in England in terms of importance and wealth. This image is derived from that published by William Cuningham in the ‘Cosmographical Glasse’ in 1558. Frostick state that this is from its second state. This plan of Norwich records the city from the west and was first printed by George Braun and Frans Hogenberg in their third volume of the ‘Civitates Orbis Terrerum’. The walled city is clearly depicted with its gates. The royal arms are upper left with those of the city top right flanking the ornate title cartouche. Lower left is a panel identifying 21 locations. The plate is finished with a couple of Elizabethan figures in the foreground. This example bears Latin text to the verso. Provenance: Clive A. Burden Ltd. Fordham (1965) p. 5; Frostick (2002) Plans no. 2; Koeman (1967-70) II B & H 3, no. 1.
