The uncommon FIRST STATE of this significant map depicting as it does the Post roads of New England, one of the very first to do so. The postal road is depicted beginning at Portsmouth in present day New Hampshire, extending south through Boston and along the coast to New York. From there it turns west and continues to Philadelphia. As is common with Moll maps much detail is included in textual form in the blank areas of the map, here the Ocean. This describes the A fascinating account of the post routes in the colonies fills part of the map – ‘The Western Post setts out from Philadelphia every Fryday, leaving letters at Burlington and Pert Amboy and arrives at New York on Sunday night …’ Krieger, Cobb and Turner pp. 26-7; McCorkle 729.2; Phillips (A) 574-46.
