A large imposing wall map of the United States and Mexico first published by Jacob Monk in 1852. Although this is a later issue of 1856 the map accurately records the political development of the west to the year 1856. Both Kansas and Nebraska Territories were formed in 1854. Washington Territory the year before. The second Mexican cession of land under the Gadsden Treaty of 1853 is also reflected. A table of ‘Distances of the Several Routes Explored for a Rail Road from the Mississippi to the Pacific’ is included above the title. Minnesota Territory which includes present day Dakota is in two regions: Pembina and Blue Earth. Oklahoma is unnamed and divided into three regions: Chah-lah-kee, Miscogee, and Cha-Ta. California is depicted developing fast with numerous settlements and roads identified. There is also a large inset of the world on Mercator’s projection. The hole is ‘drawn, engraved, printed by Hoen & Co. Provenance: from the collection of Rodney Shirley. Rumsey 602; Wheat (TMW) 794; Wheat (Gold) 243.
