A rather curious unrecorded early map of the southern night sky. About its engraver Balthasar von Westerhout little could be found, he is not listed in Tooley’s ‘Dictionary of Mapmakers’. He merits an entry in Benezit’s ‘Dictionnaire des Peintres Sculpteurs Dessinateurs et Graveurs’ where he is described as having been born in Antwerp and died in Prague 21 April 1728. He was schooled by L. Goutier in Antwerp and is known for engraving portraits and historical works. The title of the map refers to the date 1687 and this is taken as a publication date. The knowledge of the skies of the southern hemisphere for centuries was derived from that of the Egyptian’s. However it was not until the sixteenth century that they were rediscovered. It was not until 1676 that a new and accurate survey of the southern hemisphere was undertaken by Edmund Halley from the island of St. Helena and published in 1679. The pagination ‘TAB. V’ indicates that it is to be found in a book although the work could not be identified. It could not be traced in Warner. Further study of this map appears warranted. Not in Warner ‘The Sky Explored’.
