The ‘Illustrated London News’ was the leading paper of the day. On occasion ‘Supplements’ were published and in June 1861 to mark the outbreak of the American Civil War this large lithographed map printed in two colours was issued. It was printed by Theodor Ettling and depicts the United States divided by the War. The Union and Confederate States are depicted in different colours. The eastern states are split between pro and anti-slavery whilst the border states of Kentucky and Missouri much in dispute are classified as being a part of the South where British interests lay. The map does not just focus on the eastern conflict but displays a proposed Arizona Territory south of New Mexico!. Both Nevada and Utah are also in an early form. Washington and Oregon are delineated with their eastern boundaries in the Rocky Mountains. A large Kansas extends to the Rocky Mountains and omits any mention of Colorado. It also details the fledgling network of transportation including wagon roads and railroads. A number of proposed railways are shown.
