This small map illustrates one of the most famous episodes in the lead up to the French and Indian War. The march of the British Army under General Braddock to Fort Duquesne (later Pittsburgh) which culminated in the Battle of the Monongahela. This conflict was lost by Braddock. It is derived from a drawing by Captain Robert Orme, an aide-de-camp to General Braddock. The nineteen encampments made en-route are displayed. The map covers the route which originated in Maryland and traversed western Pennsylvania. An ornate title cartouche and compass rose finish the map. Evidence of the map being drawn on American sources is seen in the fact that the longitude is drawn west from Philadelphia which is unusual considering it was published in England. The ‘Grand Magazine of Magazines’ was a short-lived publication issued from July 1758 to December 1759. All maps from the magazine are very scarce. Brown & Cohen (2015) p. 15 (illustrating the original manuscript); Jolly, D. C. GMOM-15.
