This is the second edition of Nicolas Bion’s manual on globes first published in Paris the previous year, 1699. The very attractive double page double hemisphere map of the heavens is in full early wash colour heightened in gold. The plate entitled ‘Petite Ourse Grande Ourse’ shows the reader how to find the North Pole. Bion (1652-1733) described himself as a producer of mathematical instruments to Louis XIV at the Quai de l’Orloge du Palais au Soleil d’Or. Bion was an important figure in his day. From 1700 he produced terrestrial and celestial globes from 5 to 32 cms. in diameter. His son of the same name followed him in the family business.
