The firm of Letts, Son and Co. are best remembered in English minds by their diaries first published in 1835 by John Letts, the founder of the firm. It was his son Thomas who upon taking over the business rapidly expanded the diaries and general publishing. Thomas Letts died in 1873 and in 1884 the firm published Letts’s Popular County Atlas with maps of the English Counties and Welsh regions. Each map is detailed and coloured. They are lithographic prints taken from those of John and Charles Walker first issued as the British Atlas in 1837. An 1853 edition of that atlas is offered in this catalogue. The following year the business was forced in to liquidation and was taken over by Edward Cassey & Co. who continued to concentrate on the diaries only. Beresiner pp. 143-4. Carroll no. 105.M.
