A virtually unknown cartographer, Elias Baeck (1681-1748) was a publisher and engraver in Augsburg, Germany. His ‘Atlas Geographicus’ was first published in 1710 and contained thirty small maps. The majority illustrate coats of arms and a descriptive banner as here. In this first state the plate number is ‘5’, for the second edition of the atlas c.1740, this was altered to 13. Baeck signs the plate as engraver lower right. Provenance: Doreen Green 2002; private English collection.
