In 1820 Samuel Leigh published ‘Leigh’s New Picture of England and Wales’, a miniature county atlas which proved a success. For it he engaged the services of Sidney Hall to engrave a series of engraved maps. The series of maps can be found sold as a separate county atlas as here but is more often found bound with the Road Book. The title page identifies this as a ‘New Edition’ of just the county atlas. It is quite uncommon to find the atlas alone without the more usual accompanying ‘Road-Book’. With the bookseller’s plate inside front cover of the famous firm of ‘Cruchley Mapseller & Publisher 81, Fleet Street’, also publishers of atlases. Chubb 382.
