A beautiful example of arguably Bellin’s greatest atlas, the ‘Petit Atlas Maritime’. Rare in such fine condition, most examples at auction having conditional problems. Our example bears not the usual 581 maps, but 582, this being an additional map entitled ‘Carte Reduite des Decouvertes des Russes Entre l’Asie et l’Amerique’ bound as the fourth map in the third volume. This focuses on the Russian discoveries in North West America and shows the tracks of Bering & Tchirikow. Only two examples could be located with the extra map, this being the single third volume in the Nordenskiold Collection in Helsinki and the second example at the Library of Congress. The printed indexes call for 575 maps, as stated however many authorities call for 581, the following 6 being uncalled for are present. In volume 2 plates 39 bis ‘Carte de l’Entree de la Riviere de Kourou’, and 61 bis ‘Carte des Isles Malouines’. Volume 3 plates 92 bis ‘Isle de Mogodor’, and 95 bis ‘Costes du Senegal’. Volume 4 plates 50 bis ‘Plan du port du Passage’, and 109 bis ‘Plan de la Ville de Venise’. Provenance; with embossed blind stamp to each title of E. Dufosse, Paris.
