Christoph Weigel (1654-1725) was the elder of a family of engravers and publishers in Nuremberg. He worked in partnership with the geographer Johann David Kohler (1684-1755), a professor in Altdorf and Gottingen. Amongst several atlases they worked together on was the ‘Descriptio Orbis Antiqui’ published c.1720. A classical atlas, the maps were most likely engraved by Michael Kauffer (1673-1756) whose signature appears on a couple of other maps in the work. The title is surrounded by coins and medallions of ancient Britain. Although not in Shirley’s work on maps of the British Isles, it is known that there were two states. This is believed to be the second with the addition of the plate number ‘7’ upper right. Provenance: acquired from Doreen Green 1997.
