The ‘Illustrated Hand Atlas on Country and Ethnology’ was published by Friedrich Arnold Brockhaus (1772-1823) and engraved by Heinrich Leutemann. The extremely attractive plates bear numerous vignettes of sights, typical flora and fauna, geological features and inhabitants in costumes, around the maps. One of the world maps illustrates the air and ocean currents. Provenance: acquired from Robert Walker in 2000 for the private collection of Rodney Shirley. See Phillips 841.

Folio (380 x 270 mm.), recent half calf, marbled paper boards, upper board with calf gilt title label affixed, spine with raised bands, gilt ruled compartments, each with ornate central gilt feature. With 22 double page steel-engraved plates in early wash colour, each with ornate vignettes surrounding, initial world with some pen marks and foxing, in good condition.
