A superb set of the scarce complete Paris edition. The first seven volumes are a translation of the first four volumes of Green’s Collection published by Astley, London, 1745-47. The Abbé Prévost compiled volumes VIII to XV. Of these volumes VIII-XI were on the East Indies and Asia, volumes XII-XV are on the Americas. Volume XVI is the index printed by the original publisher Didot’s widow. Volume XVII is a Supplement volume relating to new voyages in the East Indies drawn from the Dutch edition printed at The Hague 1747-1780. The final three volumes are a Continuation by Meusnier de Querlon, A. Deleyre and Roussellot de Surgy with voyages to the Arctic, the final volume is devoted to the Pacific voyages of Cook, Wallis, Byron and Bougainville. The work covers all the major voyages to date and is profusely illustrated with a fine series of engravings by the likes of Tardieu, Cochin and others. Brunet notes that the work certainly has merit and that volume XX is especially difficult to find. Brunet IV 868; Cox I p. 32; Hill 1391; Sabin 65402; Shirley BL G.Prev 1a.
