This atlas is in reality a celestial one, bearing twenty-nine beautifully engraved charts of various historical representations of the stellar and planetary systems. About Andreas Cellarius we know very little. A native of the Palatinate, Germany, he became a learned mathematician and rector of the Latin school at Hoorn, Holland. This atlas, the only Dutch celestial one produced throughout their great cartographic period, represents the pinnacle of such works. It was sumptuously produced and published by Joannes Janssonius in Amsterdam. A number of the plates are engraved by Joannes van Loon, and it is likely that he engraved the others. This particular one represents the planetary system according to Ptolemy and is the first in the book … This celestial chart from Cellarius’ famous atlas depicts the stellar system from the southern hemisphere. Most probably engraved by Joannes van Loon, it is the largest of the maps relating to North America, measuring 415 mm. in diameter. Projected from the southern hemisphere, it does embrace the northern one to the top of California as an island. Amongst the nomenclature here is P. Sir Francisco Draco. On the mainland nearby is a curious large river named R. de Caral. To the south is the Rio Norte, bearing upstream the Real d. Nueva Mexico, or Santa Fe. The east coast is seen up to Chesapeake Bay, but bears just two names, I. Iordacat and C de Florida” (Burden). It is richly engraved in the baroque style with a title across two drapes that are supported either side by putti and angels. The sphere is supported by Titans, standing in the background are groups of astronomers. This is an example of the second state with the plate number in the lower right border as issued in the ‘Harmonia Macroscosmica siu Atlas Universalis et Novus…’ of 1661. Burden #347; Kanas #7.1.2; Koeman (1967) vol. 4 pp. 2-4 no. 1; McLaughlin #C-1; Phillips (1909-) nos. 469 & 4274.
