The third state of these tables engraved by Thomas Hutchinson (fl.1733-54). He was born circa 1706 in Fulham and would be apprenticed to map maker John Senex for seven years from 1721. Half of this plate is taken up with a large table of distances between the major towns and cities of England and Wales. The remaining half bears a map of most of the British Isles and illustrates the Judges Circuits. The Shetland Isles and Hebrides are included on two inset maps. A second state had the plate included in John Cary’s edition of William Camden’s ‘Britannia’, 1789. Hutchinson’s imprint was removed lower left. For this third state included in John Stockdale’s edition of the ‘Britannia’, 1805, his imprint was added below the title. Provenance: F. Tipson 1992; private English collection. Shirley (1988) Hutchinson 1 state 3; Worms & Baynton-Williams (2004).
