This fine detailed lithographic map depicts the geology of Victoria, Australia, drawn at a scale of 1:2,000,000 or about 32 miles to the inch. The main surface strata are coloured keyed upper right including one highlighting the gold regions. Gold had been discovered in Ballarat in 1851 which caused an inevitable Gold Rush. At its peak the gold was flowing in to capital Melbourne at the rate of 2 tons a week! The Geelong-Ballarat railway line opened in 1862 is depicted amongst others. The maps is drawn from that by Alfred E. C. Selwyn (Government Geologist and Director of Mining and Geological Surveys) in 8 sheets published in Melbourne, July 1st, 1863. It was published in Gotha by J. Perthes. Petermann arrived at Gotha in 1854 to join the published company of Perthes. He founded and produced the famous journal named after him. Dreyer-Eimbcke IMCoS Journal 70 pp. 19-27.
